One of the big 3 Ketaconazole, is an anti-fungal commonly used because a lot of people with hair loss have overactive yeast on their scalps. The infestation of yeast causes an increase in inflammation and hair loss, causing loss of natural hair growth . Bacteria naturally produce fungicides and compete with yeast for resources/space in your body/gut/scalp.
When you take antibiotics these kill off bacteria both good and bad. When you’ve lessened the natural colonies of good bacteria you end up both decreasing the fungicides they produce as well as open up a bunch of new space for yeasts to grow in. As the yeasts pick up in number then both your inflammation and hair loss increases. This is the same reason why taking probiotics/yogurt has been a great method of hair treatment shown to lessen hair loss in many men.
Prednisone is a corticosteroid. In contrast to anabolic steroids (used by “bodybuilders”), corticosteroids are used in inflammatory conditions for their anti–inflammatory effects. They have a rapid onset of action, and profoundly affect many parts of the immune system as well as most other body systems. Corticosteroids are a cornerstone of treating most types of vasculitis, and are often used in combination with other immunosuppressive medications.
One of the numerous potential side–effects of prednisone and other forms of corticosteroid treatment is hirsutism — excessive growth of body hair. Patients vary in the degree to which this side–effect of steroids occurs. Although some experience minimal hirsutism, the patient depicted here developed this side effect after taking 10 milligrams of prednisone for a few months.
Pharmacologic treatment options for seborrheic dermatitis include antifungal preparations (selenium sulfide, pyrithione zinc, azole agents, sodium sulfacetamide and topical terbinafine) that decrease colonization by lipophilic yeast and anti-inflammatory agents (topical steroids). Suggested products are listed in Table 1. For severe disease, keratolytics such as salicylic acid or coal tar preparations may be used to remove dense scale; then topical steroids may be applied. Other options for removing adherent scale involve applying any of a variety of oils (peanut, olive or mineral) to soften the scale overnight, followed by use of a detergent or coal tar shampoo.
Male pattern baldness is the common type of hair loss that develops in many men at some stage. The condition is sometimes called androgenetic alopecia. It is caused by a combination of hereditary (genetic) and hormonal factors.
Hair is made in hair follicles. A hair normally grows from each hair follicle for about three years. It is then shed and a new hair grows from the follicle. As balding develops, affected hair follicles gradually become smaller than normal. Each new hair that grows is thinner and shed more quickly than before. This eventually leads to a much smaller hair follicle and a thin hair that does not grow out to the skin surface.
Male hormones are involved in causing these changes. Hair follicles convert testosterone (the main male hormone) into another hormone called dihydrotestosterone. Affected hair follicles become more sensitive to dihydrotestosterone and this causes the hair follicles to shrink.
For some men, this normal ageing process can be distressing, particularly if it is excessive or occurs early in life. Treatment with finasteride can help prevent further hair loss. It works by stopping the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone.
Finasteride is only available on a prescription from a doctor, but it is not available on the NHS. This means you will be asked to pay the full price of the tablets when you receive your supply.

How it works
Using topical treatments to the scalp works best if the active ingredients can penetrate the scalp. The scalp has several layers with the outmost layer being the stratum corneum (formed of keratin protein and oils). Since this layer gives good protection to the scalp it is hard to penetrate otherwise. This is where microneedling comes into play. Microneedling helps penetrate the stratum corneum causing topical products to work better and by helping to stimulate pathways to repair, re-grow, and heal hair.
Your physician may perform microneedling by itself or with PRP depending on your specific situation. The microneedling helps break down the barrier and helps your skin absorb more topical products and the plasma rich platelets to reach your scalp. Needle length is determined by your physician. The holes created close back up in a few hours. You may experience some redness or bleeding and the red marks may be visible up to 1-2 days afterwards.
Microneedling is not used in patients with scalp wounds, acne, acute infection or inflammation.
